Photos/History: Miniatures/Succulents

I've told the story about how I got started with keeping plants, when a neighbor lady gave me a Jade plant (pic) & a handful of cuttings, among them a 'stick' with no foliage, in a jar of water .

I don't have any photos of that "stick-in-a-jar-of-water", but below are 2 photos of that plant, as he looked when originally potted & what he looks like today. I consider this Jade to be the Grandfather or Great Grandfather of all of our Jades, past & present.

My personal history with Jade trees was limited to recognition of the cultivar as "dorm-room" plants or good house-warming presents for bachelors, because they could survive inattention & wouldn't die even if you were lax in taking care of them.

Learning how to propagate from cuttings was an epiphany for me, which generated the enthusiasm that is responsible, in large part, for taking up a hobby that takes years to fruition, at 80 years of age.

However, it doesn't take years & years to emulate & I began potting rooted cuttings in little bonsai-style bowls.

It was fun & easy & gave instantaneous satisfaction, instead of taking 10 or 20 years to see an outcome.
